How it is calculated
Your stop must be hit before liquidation, with some room left for price spikes and slippage. This calculator keeps the stop within 80% of the distance to liquidation.
Max safe leverage = 1 ÷ (stop distance % ÷ 0.8 + MMR)
Above the limit leverage, liquidation comes before the stop: the stop never triggers and you lose the whole margin.
Worked example
A long at 60,000.00 with a stop at 58,800.00 is 2.00% away. The highest safe leverage is 33x. Above 39x, the position would be liquidated before the stop is hit.
Frequently asked questions
What leverage should I use?
Choose it from your stop: the wider the stop, the lower the leverage. The result here is the maximum, not a target; using less leverage is always safer.
Why 80% and not 100%?
Fast moves, wicks and slippage can carry the price past your stop. Keeping a 20% buffer between stop and liquidation makes it much more likely that the stop closes the trade, not the liquidation engine.
Is 100x leverage ever safe?
At 100x the liquidation is less than 1% away, so only a stop closer than about 0.4% fits. Normal market noise often moves price that much within minutes.
Does leverage change my profit?
Leverage changes the return on margin, not the profit in dollars for the same position size. The position size calculator shows how to size the trade.
Let TradeLabX do this on every trade
Before you open a position, TradeLabX checks your entry, stop and leverage against real price history and warns you if the liquidation risk is high. It also scans the futures market for setups with entry, stop and target, and lets you test them on a virtual account.
