How it is calculated
With isolated margin, your position is liquidated when the loss eats your margin down to the maintenance margin. With leverage L, the margin is 1/L of the position, so the price can move about 1/L minus the maintenance margin rate against you.
Long: liquidation = entry × (1 − 1/L + MMR)Short: liquidation = entry × (1 + 1/L − MMR)
MMR is the maintenance margin rate. The higher the leverage, the closer the liquidation price is to your entry.
Worked example
A long at 60,000.00 with 10x leverage and a 0.50% maintenance margin rate is liquidated at about 54,300.00. That is only 9.50% below the entry.
Frequently asked questions
What is a liquidation price?
It is the price at which the exchange closes your leveraged position because your margin can no longer cover the loss. With isolated margin you lose the margin you put into that position.
Why is my exchange's liquidation price slightly different?
Exchanges use tiered maintenance margin rates that grow with position size, and some include fees or funding in the calculation. Use this result as a close estimate and confirm on your exchange before you trade.
How do I avoid liquidation?
Always use a stop-loss that is hit well before the liquidation price, and choose the leverage from your stop distance, not the other way around. The leverage calculator shows the highest leverage that keeps your stop safe.
Does this work for cross margin?
No. With cross margin your whole account balance backs the position, so the liquidation price depends on your balance and other positions. This calculator assumes isolated margin.
Let TradeLabX do this on every trade
Before you open a position, TradeLabX checks your entry, stop and leverage against real price history and warns you if the liquidation risk is high. It also scans the futures market for setups with entry, stop and target, and lets you test them on a virtual account.
