How it is calculated

Professional traders decide the risk first: if the stop is hit, they lose a fixed share of the account, for example 1%. The position size follows from the distance to the stop.

Amount at risk = balance × risk %
Position size = amount at risk ÷ (stop distance % + 2 × fee %)
Margin = position size ÷ leverage

Leverage does not change how much you lose at the stop. It only changes how much margin you lock up and how close liquidation is.

Worked example

With a 1,000.00 USDT balance and 1.00% risk, a long at 60,000.00 with a stop at 58,800.00 (2.00% away) allows a position of 476.19 USDT. If the stop is hit you lose about 10.00 USDT including fees. At 10x you need 47.62 USDT margin.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I risk per trade?

Many traders risk 0.5% to 2% of the account per trade. At 1%, ten losing trades in a row cost about 10% of the account, which you can recover from.

Why are fees included?

Futures fees are charged on the full position size, both on entry and exit. With a tight stop, fees can be a large part of the loss, so leaving them out makes the position too big.

Does higher leverage increase my risk?

Not at the stop: the loss at the stop depends on the position size, not the leverage. But higher leverage moves the liquidation price closer, and if it comes before your stop you lose the whole margin.

What if the margin is larger than my balance?

Then the position is too big for your account at that leverage. Either raise the leverage, as long as liquidation stays beyond the stop, or reduce the risk.

Let TradeLabX do this on every trade

Before you open a position, TradeLabX checks your entry, stop and leverage against real price history and warns you if the liquidation risk is high. It also scans the futures market for setups with entry, stop and target, and lets you test them on a virtual account.
